The travel eSIM guide
Everything you need before buying your first data plan — no jargon.
- 1
Check compatibility and unlock status
Dial *#06# and look for an EID number. No EID means no eSIM support.
- 2
Pick data size from real usage
Maps and messaging run about 0.5 GB/day; heavy social and video closer to 2 GB/day.
- 3
Buy and scan the QR on Wi-Fi
Label the line 'Travel' so it's obvious in your settings.
- 4
On arrival, flip the switches
Enable the travel line for data, keep your home line for calls, disable home roaming.
FAQ
Does my phone support eSIM?
iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, plus most 2021+ flagships. The phone must also be carrier-unlocked.
Do I keep my normal number?
Yes. Travel eSIMs are data-only, so your physical SIM stays active for calls and SMS — just switch off its data roaming.
Should I install before or after landing?
Install at home on Wi-Fi, but only enable the line when you arrive. Most plans start their validity window on first network connection.
Is unlimited really unlimited?
Usually it means unthrottled up to a fair-use cap, then slowed. If you need under 15 GB, a metered plan is almost always cheaper.
Can I hotspot other devices?
Most metered plans allow it. Several unlimited plans block tethering — we flag hotspot support on every card.
